ABOUT OILS

We use cold-pressed, unrefined oils because, like food, these ingredients are meant to nourish. The elimination of heat leaves nutrients in their intended state, and allows the skin access to the many healing properties found within.

ABOUT ESSENTIAL OILS

H IS FOR LOVE uses only the highest quality essential oils that are the product of steam distillation or CO2 extraction. We believe these oils to be safest for use on the skin.

OILS

+ Argania Spinosa (Argan)

This beautiful oil has received high praise from the natural skincare world, and for good reason. Tocopherols, phenols, carotenes, squalene and fatty acids keep skin elastic and firm. While argan oil is a powerful antioxidant and free-radical scavenger, it is soothing and deeply moisturizing to dry and damaged skin. With a nutty, sweet smell, our argan oil is cold-pressed, unrefined, and organic.

It was the during our search for an organic, cold-pressed, pure, and trustworthy source for argan oil that we realized just how much we wanted to create a skincare line people could trust.

+ Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot Kernel)

Soothing and gentle, apricot kernel oil is excellent for oily and aging skin. Rich in vitamins A and E and gamma linoleic acid (from essential fatty acid omega 6), apricot kernel oil is the perfect choice as a balancing oil for a more deeply moisturizing product.

+ Adansonia Digitata (Baobab)

Cold-pressed and unrefined, rich in vitamins A, E, F, and sterols. Baobab is an easily absorbed oil, and an excellent moisturizing agent for dry skin. The history of this oil is rich; pressed from the seeds found inside the fruit pod of the baobab tree, it has been used for centuries in beauty formulas. Baobab has a special place in our hearts here at H, as the land our family used to visit in South Africa was home to many of these magnificent trees. They are breathtaking to see, and it is no wonder they contain within their pods such nourishment.

+ Beeswax

It is important to us at H that care be taken in the harvesting of our beeswax. It is because of this that we love to use local beeswax, and when that isn’t possible, we make sure we use sources close to home that we know and trust. We love bees, and that is one of the reasons that we choose organic and wild-harvested ingredients in all of our products.

+ Ricinus Communis (Castor)

Highly soothing, castor oil forms a protective barrier against harsh environmental factors and has a long absorption time, making it an excellent choice for our lip products. Castor is a very thick oil and lends a touch of shine to Lip Conditioner No. 1.

*Heating during the oil extraction process denatures the protein ricin, which is toxic. Because of this our castor oil must always be refined and doesn’t affect efficacy in any way.

+ Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa Butter)

Expeller-pressed and unrefined, our cocoa butter has a pungent aroma that is indicative of its purity. Very high in fats, it melts easily into skin. We love cocoa butter and we love good fat! You will never find us shying away from healthy fats because we know how good they are for mind and body. Give us all the cocoa butter! Slightly astringent and easily absorbed, hazelnut oil is a favorite for it's light feel and warming sensation when massaged into the skin.

+ Orylus Avellana (Hazelnut Oil)

Slightly astringent and easily absorbed, hazelnut oil is a favorite in the skincare world for its ability to tone the skin and stimulate blood flow. It promotes regeneration of cells and results in more youthful looking skin.

+ Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba)

Said to act as a natural anti-inflammatory, jojoba oil is actually a lipid plant wax. It is similar to our own skin’s sebum and is therefore easily absorbed. Excellent for use on inflamed and irritated skin, jojoba oil is perfect for use in balms where extra soothing is necessary. It acts as a gentle barrier against the elements, but is breathable and not heavy. Jojoba oil is also found in many haircare products because of it’s excellent conditioning abilities.

+ Macadamia Integrifolia (Macadamia Nut)

Organic and unrefined, this gentle and lightweight oil contains the perfect balance of essential fatty acids. Phytosterols protect and sooth inflamed skin, and palmitoleic acid keeps skin firm while palitoleic acid is a powerful antioxidant that hydrates and supports skin healing. Macadamia nut oil is said to be one of the most highly regenerative oils, and we have found this to be true. We so believe in this oil that is appears in nearly every oil-based product we offer.

+ Punica Granatum (Pomegranate Seed)

One of our favorite oils for fighting signs of aging, pomegranate seed oil is high in antioxidants and scavenges free-radicals while revitalizing dull skin. It promotes cell-regeneration, hydrates, and strengthens.

+ Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn)

With a long history in folk medicine and Ayurvedic medicine this brilliant red oil is pressed from the whole fruit with seed. Used for centuries to treat burns, scars, and even reduce signs of aging, sea buckthorn oil is rich in essential fatty acids, tocopherols, phytosterols, and carotenes. The nourishment and moisture provided by this oil and combined with other powerful healing oils like tamanu and pomegranate, create a symbiotic blend of powerfully healing nourishment.

+ Butyrospermum Park (Shea Butter)

Shea is native to certain parts of Africa, and is a women-run industry. It is a fat extracted from the nut of the shea tree, and is really a story about women being empowered, as millions of women in Africa work to bring us this precious ingredient. Healing to wounds and scars, and shown to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, it is gentle enough to treat diaper rash and sunburns, but powerful enough to be effective against eczema, and dermatitis.

+ Olea Europaea (Olive Oil)

Highly stable and emollient, olive oil is the base for RAPHA, and extends the shelf life of the other more fragile oils in the formula. Virgin, unrefined, and cold-pressed, this oil is rich and pungent, the way pure olive oil should be.

+ Squalane - Olive Derived

As we age, the level of squalane found in our skin is greatly reduced, and some believe that the loss, which inhibits skin’s normal function, contributes signs of aging. Squalane contains natural lipids found in our own skin and helps to prevent against the breakdown of collagen. Squalane has antibacterial properties and it is one of the most readily absorbed oils, allowing for further penetration of the oils with which it is combined. Because there is not a squalane tree, this oil which is derived from olives, cannot itself be certified organic. Our squalene comes from olive trees in Spain.

+ Rosa Canina (Rosehip Seed)

Touted by the natural skincare industry as the leader in anti-aging oils, rosehip seed oil truly delivers when it comes to damaged and aging skin. Considered a dry oil, it penetrates deeply, delivering high levels of essential fatty acids and moisture without leaving a greasy residue. Rosehip seed oil reduces the appearance of scars, fine lines, and wrinkles, and is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant.

+ Calophyllum Inophyllum (Tamanu)

Tamanu diminishes the appearance of scars and it encourages rapid repair, hydration and cell renewal. Anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory, tamanu promotes tissue regeneration and is one of the best known ingredients for healing damaged skin.

+ Cocos Nucifera (Coconut Oil)

This raw, virgin, and unrefined coconut oil is excellent at providing a protective barrier to help the skin retain moisture. We only use this oil in Lip Glacé because coconut oil doesn’t seem to work well with all skin types. However, internally and on the lips it is one of the best oils for nourishment.

+ Citrullus Lanatus (Kalahari Melon)

Rich with omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids, kalahari melon seed oil is rich in antioxidants, restores elasticity, and helps to combat premature aging.

+ Vitamin E (non GMO)

Highly antioxidant, and derived from non GMO soybean oil, Vitamin E is used as a natural preservative. Found in NECTAR, BARA, LIP CONDITIONER, and GLACÉ.
